Teaching + Choreography

Alongside his performance career, Ryan is an educator, choreographer, and collaborative creator with a particular focus on partnering, physical storytelling, and ensemble-based creation.

As an educator, Ryan creates an environment where dancers can build confidence through communication, trust, and a deeper understanding of weight sharing. His teaching experience includes classes and workshops at studios and intensives across the country, including Steps on Broadway. He also co-created Partnering for Broadway, a New York based class series providing dancers with practical training in contemporary and musical theater partnering.

Ryan’s creative practice has developed through both his own choreography and collaborative creation. With Pilobolus, he has contributed to the development of new work, including Lamentation Variations, created in connection with the Martha Graham Dance Company’s centennial celebration, Virtuous and Vicious, and the company’s evening-length cabaret production. Working within Pilobolus’ collaborative process has allowed him to contribute not only as a performer, but as an active participant in the development of movement, partnering, character, and theatrical ideas.

Ryan has also worked as a creative consultant with choreographer Lindsey Hanson on Gethsemane / The Sanctuary Project, an interdisciplinary project supported by a $250,000 grant and bringing together 22 dancers at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. Ryan was asked to choreograph for the inaugural Steps Day.

Across his teaching and creative work, Ryan is interested in how collaboration can expand what is physically and theatrically possible. He is available for guest teaching, masterclasses, workshops, choreography, movement direction, private coaching, and creative collaborations.
